Excretion of copper in sweat of patients with Wilson's disease during sauna bathing.

چکیده
Copper was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry in sweat samples obtained during sauna bathing (15 min at 93 °) from seven patients (2 5 5) with Wilson’s disease (hepatolenticular degeneration). In one patient who was not being treated with penicillamine, the estimated excretion of copper in total body sweat during the sauna bath was 18 /¿g. In six patients who were receiving oral penicillamine (1 g per day), the estimated excretions of copper in total body sweat during the sauna bath averaged 106 ¡ig, (range = 43 to 179). This study shows that sweating can be a significant route for the excre tion of copper in patients with Wilson’s disease who are being treated with penicillamine. Thermal induction of sweating by means of sauna bathing may possibly serve as a therapeutic adjunct to the customary treatment of Wilson’s disease by means of low-copper diet and penicillamine.

Atomic absorption spectrometry of nickel, copper, zinc, and lead in sweat collected from healthy subjects during sauna bathing.
Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry in sweat samples obtained by the arm-bag technique from 48 healthy adult subjects (33 a” , 15 ) during sauna bathing (15 mm at 93 #{176}C, dry heat). The men sweated more profusely than the women (volume, in milliliters, of sweat collected: mean, SD, and range: 23 ± 12 (355) and 7 ± 3 (2-13), respectively. The concentrations, in...
متن کاملEVALUATION OF LABORATORY FINDINGS IN CHILDREN WITH WILSON\'S DISEASE IN EMA M KHOMEINI HOSPITAL DURING 1994-2003
Wilson's disease is a rare but treatable condition with variable clinical presentations. Its diagnosis depends on a combination of clinical and laboratory findings. We evaluated the clinical and laboratory findings in children with Wilson's disease (WD). Twenty -seven children (4-14 years, 59.2 % male, 40.7% female) with confirmed WD were evaluated between 1994 and 2003 at Imam Khomeini Hos...
متن کاملIon-exchange chromatography of amino acids in sweat collected from healthy subjects during sauna bathing.
Amino acids were measured by ion-exchange liquid chromatography in sweat samples obtained from 22 healthy men during sauna bathing. Amino acids were also measured in plasma (collected before breakfast) and urine (24-h collections) from the same subjects. Serine, ornithine, citrulline, and aspartic acid were present in sweat in mean concentrations >10-fold their mean concentrations in plasma. In...
متن کاملEffects of dry and mist saunas on circulatory and thermoregulatory functions in humans
To test the hypothesis that mist sauna is a safer way of bathing than dry sauna, we compared changes in circulatory and thermoregulatory functions during 10 min sauna bathing in mist sauna at 40 ̊C with relative humidity of 100%, and in dry sauna by infrared ray at 70 ̊C with relative humidity of 15%. Subjects were seven healthy young men aged 29 ± 6 yrs (mean ± SD). We measured blood pressure, h...
متن کاملBenefits and risks of sauna bathing.
Although sauna bathing causes various acute, transient cardiovascular and hormonal changes, it is well tolerated by most healthy adults and children. Sauna bathing does not influence fertility and is safe during the uncomplicated pregnancies of healthy women. Some studies have suggested that long-term sauna bathing may help lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension and improve the left...
